How often does your teleprompter lose your place?
Five voice teleprompters followed the same seven reads. We measured how much of the time each one showed the wrong line.
OnPrompt ran on audio alone in these comparisons. Face assist, which also follows your lips through the front camera, cut the wrong line further in our loud-room test.
Time on the wrong line
Every app, across the reads they all ran. When a teleprompter marks a line you are not reading, your eyes land in the wrong place and you stall, search the screen or say the wrong words. Shorter is better.
Read by read
Each read tests something people do on camera: going back to fix a sentence, skipping a passage, ad-libbing, paraphrasing, reading in a noisy room. One was read by a person; the other six use synthetic voices, so every app heard exactly the same audio. Pick a read to see how every app did on it, then watch OnPrompt and Teleprompter.com follow it line by line.
With lip reading
The tests ran on audio alone. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Face assist also follows your lips through the front camera. We replayed this take with and without it, as recorded and with the noise of a loud room mixed in. The replay measures on the Mac rather than from a screen recording, so its numbers differ from the bars above.
Following the reader
The gray line is where the reader was in the script; the colored line is where the app was. When they part, the app is showing the wrong line.
When the next line arrives
A line that arrives late leaves you looking at words you have already said. This is the median time from starting a line to the app moving to it, on each read; below zero means the line was already there when you reached it.
Finding your place after a jump
When you go back a sentence or skip a passage, the app has to find you again. Each mark is one jump and how long the app took to show the line you were reading; the values beside each read are medians.

Try it yourself
Paste this into OnPrompt and any other teleprompter, read it aloud, and go back a sentence partway through.
How we tested
- Seven reads of everyday scripts. One is a person reading on an iPhone. Six use built-in macOS voices and include go-backs, skipped passages, restarted sentences, ad-libs, paraphrases and one read in a noisy room.
- Each app heard the same audio through its own speech recognizer, at its default settings. Teleprompter.com ran on a Mac, fed the audio through a virtual audio device. OnPrompt ran in the iOS Simulator, fed Apple's on-device recognizer output for the same audio on its original timing, on audio alone with Face assist off. The read by a person replays what an iPhone's recognizer heard during the take.
- Each app's screen was recorded, and the scorer read the text on every frame, found the line the app marked as current, and compared it with the line being spoken at that moment. Wrong line is the share of reading time an app showed a line other than the one being read.
- The scorer, the scripts and the audio are published so anyone can run the test again.
- Results vary with voice, microphone and room.
